Starting a statistics series on Medium

· 1 min read · maths

I am starting a statistics series on Medium called Stats_with_FirstPrinciples.

Why

A lot of statistics is taught as a toolbox: memorise the test, plug in the numbers, report the p-value. I have always found it more useful (and more fun) to rebuild ideas from the ground up, the way I learned to approach physics. If you understand where a formula comes from, you know when it applies and when it quietly breaks.

The plan

The series starts before probability, with randomness and uncertainty themselves, and then builds step by step: events and sample spaces, how probabilities add and multiply, counting, and onwards toward inference. Each post leans on everyday examples (cards, passwords, lotteries, and locks) rather than heavy notation, so the intuition comes first and the maths follows.

If you have ever used a statistical test without being sure why it works, this series is for you. Follow along on Medium.
